How to Train Your Dragon film sequels, arena show, television series and book 10...

Posted on: Friday, August 17, 2012

I was very excited to go to New York last week and meet up with the guys from DreamWorks to talk about the sequels to the How to Train Your Dragon film, and see the live How to Train Your Dragon arena show, and catch up on what’s happening with the How to Train Your Dragon television show...

There’s a lot going on!

Firstly, the film sequels: There will be three films in all, and Dean DeBlois, the writer and co-director of the first How to Train Your Dragon film, will be writing and directing all three of them. The entire cast and crew have stayed on to make all three films, including Bonnie Arnold as producer, and John Powell as composer. This is pretty unusual, and you’ll understand why when I tell you that when the last film is finished in 2016, the trilogy will have taken THIRTEEN YEARS to make…

Unfortunately I can’t tell you the details of Dean’s story for the next film, because that is a secret until the film comes out in 2014. But, if anything, it is even more touching and dramatic than the first How to Train Your Dragon film.

I was also in New York to see How to Train Your Dragon: The Arena Spectacular.

You have never seen anything quite like this. The special effects are truly extraordinary – gigantic animatronic dragons, larger than dinosaurs, moving around the arena, taking flight above your head, breathing fire, it’s amazing…Have a look on their website, and you’ll see what I mean.

Meanwhile, a television series is coming out on Cartoon Network in October of this year called Dragons: Riders of Berk. The series tells stories about what happens to Hiccup in between the first and second films.

Back in England, I watched the first two episodes with my son Xanny, (8).  The animation is unusually high quality for a television series, and I think it is lovely to have an opportunity to see the characters of Astrid, Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut and Fishlegs in more detail, and also introduce more dragons, which Xanny loves.

Xanny Cowell’s view: ‘It’s amazing, funny and I couldn’t stop watching it.’

So there you are.  It’s all very exciting!

The How to Train Your Dragon Arena Show is currently touring, and visiting cities all over North America and Canada.

The television series is called Dragons: Riders of Berk and it is coming out on Cartoon Network, this October.

The 2nd How to Train Your Dragon film is coming out in 2014.

The 3rd How to Train Your Dragon film is coming out in 2016.

And the 10th How to Train Your Dragon book, ‘How to Seize a Dragon’s Jewel’, is coming out in the U.K. this October. In this book, Hiccup has become an Outcast, and Stoick the Vast is being kept captive in the Amber Slavelands….

I told you there was a lot going on!

Xcellent Dreamtroos (best wishes in Dragonese)

Cressida Cowell

Fantastic to hear that John Powell, Bonnie Arnold and Dean DeBlois are working on the future films, if the quailty of cinimatography and music are up to par with the first film then I can not wait to see them. The story and adventures are also great. How To Train Your Dragon is just fantastic. Thankyou

Will Book 10 be available in hardcover as well? We have the other 9 books -- all in hardcover. If not, then I want to pre-order the paperback version. My son and I just love the books! Thank you!!!

Hi Adrienne - the hardbacks are the American versions, and book 10 will come out in the U.S. in the spring I think. So it depends if you can wait till then! All best, Cressida

I wish there were more movies with less wait. Are there going to be a ton of episodes? I LOVE Toothless sooooo much? Why did you choose the name Toothless?

Hi Katie, there will be at 2 series of the television series, with 24 episodes each, I think. I chose the name Toothless because I thought the idea of a toothless dragon was a funny one.
